Acne can be a very stressful and depressing condition for anyone. One problem that younger people seem to suffer with is other people spreading the well known acne myths around, and blaming these myths for your acne. Many of the acne myths are not true but people still choose to tease acne sufferers with them.
For these of you who are unaware of what the main acne myths are, here you go:
Myth #1: Acne is caused by bad hygiene.
Many people still believe this myth is true and scrub their face either too much or far too hard. Scrubbing your face too hard or too often can actually aggravate your acne and make the problem worse. The best way to clean your face is to do it twice a day with mild soap, and pat your face dry when you are finished. When using the mild soap, wash your face gently.
Myth #2: Acne is caused by bad diet.
Even though bad diet can contribute to acne, it is not a direct cause. Food does not cause the problem directly, but if someone already suffers with acne then bad diet could worsen the problem.
Myth #3: Popping your pimples is the fastest cure.
Popping your pimple may seem like a good idea at the time, but it usually comes back to bite you! Popping a pimple can cause the infection to spread further and cause more pimples to appear. So resist your urge to pop that pimple, and cover it instead!
Myth #4: Makeup causing acne.
Makeup is not the direct cause of acne, although if someone suffers with bad acne then they may find that their makeup can worsen the problem. If you suffer with acne then the best makeup for you to wear is mineral makeup.
Myth #5: Masturbation or sex causes acne.
This myth has been going around for years! The answer to this one is unknown. Research shows that there are only small, if any, hormonal changes after sex or arousal. One thing we do know though is people who have higher androgen levels tend to suffer with more severe acne than others with a lower androgen level. People with a higher androgen (the ones who are more likely to suffer from severe acne) tend to have a higher sex drive. This would explain why people who are more sexually active may sometimes experience more severe acne symptoms. Whether or not a persons acne would improve with less sexual activity is unknown.
